'AFTERLIVES OF PUBLIC ART'

This Special Issue builds on the international symposium Fountains, Failures, Futures: The Afterlives of Public Art, held in Lund, Sweden, in September 2023. While public art research often focuses on commissioning, production and initial reception, this issue begins with what follows: how public artworks persist, deteriorate, are repaired, reinterpreted, altered or removed.
The fifteen contributions examine how works in urban space become subject to changing social, institutional and material conditions, and how ideas of success or failure are formed. Together, they explore the complexities of judgement, the responsibilities surrounding the long-term care of public art, and the futures that remain possible for works that no longer function as intended.
